John Ball papers, 1802-1895.

Papers chiefly consist of plantation papers including correspondence, accounts, and slave records; also included are John Ball's bank account books (1802-1812), and a rental account book (1812) of Caroline Olivia Ball. Correspondence (1821-1835) of John Ball and other Ball family members is mainly with plantation overseers including Thomas G. Finklea at Stoke, Comingtee, and elsewhere; William A. Turner at Quinby Plantation; and James Coward at Kensington and Hyde Park plantations. Letters concern daily plantation affairs, rice and other crops, livestock, repairs, and slave matters. A plantation account book (1812-1834) includes accounts with overseers at Comingtee, Midway, Kensington, Stoke, Quinby, Hyde Park, Limerick, and Back River plantations. There are also accounts with William Seymour for rent at Strawberry Ferry, accounts with slaves and free blacks, and accounts for bank and insurance stocks of Ann Simons Ball. A bound volume inscribed "Clothing and blanketing book of John Ball's Negroes, Oct. 26, 1831" contains lists (1831-1834, 1841) of slaves given clothing and blankets at Comingtee, Stoke, Kensington, and Midway plantations. The book was later used by Anne Simons Deas, granddaughter of Ann Simons Ball, to record anecdotes and traditions of Berkeley County families and plantation life, including family history notes about the Ball, Harleston, Simons, Moultrie, and Deas families.
